Hoarding is a severe mental disorder that effects one in four Americans. That means that if you drive down your street count the houses and every fourth house someone is suffering from hoarding disorder. That’s eighty-two million Americans! This is a big need!
Bio-One specializes in Hoarding. We clean out the house and get it back to a state that is safe for human habitation. This is house the process works.
Many people have questions about Hoarding.
How much does it cost? Is there a hoarding cleanup service near me? What is the hourly rate?
When someone needs help getting their house back, they call us, and we set up a time for an estimate. Estimates are at no cost to the family. We walk through of the property to assess the state of the house and talk with the family about expectations. What they want done and how they want it done. There is a misconception of this business that we come in an throw everything away. This is not true. Bio-One works our way through the house taking care to watch what we throw out, one for our safety, and two for the family. We have uncovered family heirlooms that were latterly buried for years! One time I even found pictures and medals from the Second World War the client’s father had served in the Navy during the war. She was incredibly happy to have those items back. Other items of obvious value, such as computers, jewelry, and legal documents get kept and placed in the Keep Pile.
Bio-One uses the four pile method. The four piles are, Keep, Trash, Donate, and I don’t know. The I don’t know pile is used when we are working through a house and we come across an item that the client might keep, but we aren’t sure. We place that item in the IDK pile and the client checks it and makes the final decision. This method is very effective. It helps the family to find long lost items that help them now. Bio-One has found, Wills, Trust, Property Deeds, even African Artifacts from the Congo! The client we were helping when we found the Artifacts was the daughter of Anthropologist who spent the 1950’s researching in the Congo. Our client thought that those Artifacts had been lost forever.
After we remove the trash items from the house and create a clear path to enter and exit the house, we prepare the house for a safe move in. This could include us disinfecting feces that has piled up. Removing bloody or feces contaminated carpet or bedding. Often times in hoarding situations there is a sewage backup because the house has fallen in a state of disrepair. We sanitize the house surfaces. Such as counter tops, bathroom sinks and floors. Our chemicals are EPA approved and biodegradable. Once we are finished with sanitizing, then the house can be re-habited immediately.
Bio-One does everything that that we can to get this whole process done in one day. Now, every job is different, and we have had some big jobs that lasted for a week or more. Most often we can remediate the property in one or two days.
The average hourly rate for hoarding is $250-$375/hour. That rate covers disposal and equipment used by Bio-One. Every job is different. After the walk though is complete, we will write a estimate for the total cost of the job some jobs take longer, some jobs take shorter it depends on your unique situation. In my time doing this I have never seen two hoards the same. Good work is not cheap, and cheap work is not good. Bio-One is discrete and will arrive in a plain white box truck. No big red bio sign on the side of the truck, and it definitely does not say hoarding clean out. That is part of the professionalism that sets Bio-One apart from everyone else.
Hoarding is a mental disorder that effects more people than you might think. Bio-One is here to help people get back their homes and their lives.
Global pandemics can impact every aspect of daily life, as we’ve seen with Covid-19. Viral infections can rapidly spread across the world leaving a trail of devastation, mortality, and economic destruction in its wake. Thankfully, scientific research, development, and medical trials have enabled us to create effective vaccinations against a number of diseases and viral infections, and start to combat Covid-19.
From as early as 1796, scientists have been able to create vaccinations against deadly infections. (1) Starting with Edward Jenner’s first smallpox vaccination, to the inactivated poliovirus vaccine, which has been given to children across the US since 2000. (2) If we look back to the Ebola outbreak in 2014, a safe vaccination was found to provide protection against the species Zaire ebolavirus, but only rolled out in 2020, after years of research. (3)
Yet, we now have not one, but seven different Covid-19 vaccinations currently being rolled out across the globe to combat the current global pandemic. By working together, scientists worldwide have been able to speed up testing, manufacturing, and the administration of the new game-changing vaccinations. (4) Due to the current global pandemic, the process to discover, create and mass produce life-saving vaccinations has received unprecedented financial investment and scientific collaboration. This has made it possible to maintain strict clinical and safety standards, whilst rapidly speeding up the development process. (5)
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention CDC, there are three vaccines authorized and recommended to prevent Covid-19.
1: Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19
2: Moderna Covid-19 vaccine
3: Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Covid-19 vaccine
However, there are also ongoing phase 3 clinical trials for two additional vaccinations to be used across the US;
1: AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine
2: Novavax Covid-19 vaccine (6)
Let’s take a look at how the 3 authorized Covid-19 vaccinations work to protect humans against the current life-threatening viral infection.
1: Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19
Pfizer, working with German biotech company BioNTech, has developed a vaccination using mRNA technology. Unlike a standard vaccine which injects weakened viral cells into the body to help encourage immunity, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination uses a messenger RNA sequence that contains genetic instructions to tell the person’s own cells to produce the vaccine antigens and generate an immune response. So rather than risk getting sick and being unable to fight off the viral infection, your cells will basically learn how to be immune without being exposed. This is certainly a scientific breakthrough and will transform how we protect ourselves from future outbreaks, epidemics, and global pandemics. (7)
2: Moderna Covid-19 vaccine
The Moderna Covid-19 vaccination is given in two doses. SAGE recommends that the first dose of 0.5ml is given and then a second 28 days after. The interval between doses can be extended to 42 days if required. According to the WHO, this vaccination is 92% effective against Covid-19, starting 14 days after the first dose. (8) The mRNA vaccinations are a new type of vaccine designed to protect us against infectious diseases. They will trigger an immune response, by teaching cells how to make a protein that makes the immune system produce antibodies. (9)
3: Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Covid-19 vaccine
With an efficacy rate of up to 72% after a single dose, the Janssen vaccine has been authorized for emergency use across the US. Janssen Pharmaceutica is a Belgium-based division of Johnson & Johnson and is working alongside Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccinations which store genetic instruction using a single-stranded RNA, this vaccine uses a double-stranded DNA. By adding the gene for the coronavirus spike protein to a virus called Adenovirus 26, which typically causes colds and flu symptoms, the injection can provide immunity without causing illness. (10)
During a global pandemic, protecting the most vulnerable in society is a must, so vaccinating elderly people, anyone with major underlying health conditions, and frontline medical staff will be the main priority. Next comes essential workers such as care home staff, teachers, dentists, and anyone providing an important public service where they are in contact with people on a regular basis. After this, the vaccination will become available to the majority. President Joe Biden aims to have enough Covid vaccination doses for every American adult across the US by the end of May. (11)

There is nothing quite like a global pandemic to spread fear, anxiety, and financial chaos around the world. As Covid-19 continues to infect and disrupt daily life on a global scale, as well as claim thousands of lives a day, let’s take a look at the key differences between this deadly viral infection and the Ebola pandemic.
First, a brief history of Ebola and Covid-19:
Formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Ebola was first transmitted to people from wild animals such as fruit bats and porcupines. Spreading through blood, secretions, organs, and other bodily fluids of infected people, the first cases were recorded in Central Africa in 1976. During 2014, Ebola started to spread across West Africa and then into Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. With a 90 percent lethality rate, Ebola is the most deadly virus known to man, yet it is very hard to transmit.
There are still many questions still left unanswered regarding the current global pandemic. Covid-19 is thought to have started in Wuhan City, Hubei province, China in 2019 and rapidly spread across the country and eventually across the world. Highly infectious, Covid-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome that can be deadly. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 as a global pandemic. Covid-19 has so far claimed the lives of approximately 2.36 million people.
In the past decade, the world has battled a number of deadly viral infections, from Ebola and Swine Flu to Covid-19. The question is, how is the current global pandemic different from Ebola, and why is our global response so severe to this pandemic.
Let’s take a look at 3 major differences between Covid-19 and Ebola.
The main symptoms of Ebola are body aches and muscle pain, fever, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and unexplained bleeding and bruising.
Covid-19 has symptoms that can easily be mistaken for the common cold or flu, such as body aches, fatigue, a high temperature, and continuous cough. There are some symptoms that can help you to diagnose Covid-19 such as a loss or change of sense of smell or taste, but some people can have Covid-19 and show no symptoms at all. This makes it extremely difficult to contain the virus and identify those who are currently infected.
Ebola is extremely deadly, with a fatality rate of 90 percent.
Covid-19 on the other hand is very low, at around 2-3 percent. Your chances of surviving the current pandemic are high and are related to your age and health. So if you’re young with no underlying health conditions, you’ll have a good chance of fighting the infection with no medical intervention.
While fatality is extremely low for Covid-19 compared to Ebola, it is highly infectious which is why it has rapidly spread from country to country and caused so many deaths. There has only been one confirmed case of Ebola in the USA, but 27 million Americans have been infected with Covid-19.
In fact, the Ebola outbreak was linked to the use of contaminated needles and syringes, which were used in hospitals in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nurses would recycle syringes and use five for every 300 to 600 patients per day, which is why Ebola quickly got out of hand.
Now consider the extreme precautious hospitals and medical professionals are taking to stop the spread of Covid-19. Despite wearing several layers of PPE, this viral infection is still continuing to spread, which clearly demonstrates how easily it can get out of control, which is why our response is so extreme compared to the Ebola outbreak. If the fatality rate is 2 percent and Covid-19 spreads throughout the US, it could lead to 1 million unnecessary deaths.

Compulsive hoarding is something we need to address with compassion and respect. Refreshed and energized, our residential cleaning team were ready to tackle day 2 of the hoard.
If you haven’t read part I of this hoarding clean up job: Part I: 2-Day Hoarding Clean Up Case Study
After 24 hours, our residential cleaning team had removed the majority of large items and garbage from our customer’s home. After enjoying a good night’s sleep, we were ready the next day to continue the deep clean. Arriving early, we reviewed our progress so far and were happy to see such a big difference already. Things were certainly starting to take shape and we had our sights firmly fixed on the finish line.
Day two didn’t get off to the start we had anticipated. As we waited for the last dumpster truck to deliver our dumpster, things didn’t quite go to plan. The truck delivering it to the customer’s home accidentally ripped off their truck’s bumper and our team had to down tools to offer our help. We helped the driver remove his bumper from his big rig so that he could get back on the road and on his way. While this was an unfortunate accident, it did delay us by two hours! As the sun began to set, the pressure was on to finish the job.
Music is a great motivator when cleaning out a hoard and helps our entire team to keep going even when it starts to get dark outside. Pretty tired after the heavy lifting, we eventually finished as night fell and we moved onto the decontamination process. This is a key element to our residential cleaning service and makes sure that we protect ourselves and our customers. While decontaminating our gear in the dark was a pretty strange experience, it was so worth it to see the results of our work. We had managed to remove over 12,000 lbs of debris from the customer’s home! That’s 2,000 lbs per person working on the job. Needless to say, we were exhausted but proud of our hoarding accomplishments.
I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank my entire team who took part in this 2-day hoarding clean up job. Without your help and dedication, we would not have been able to help this man and his elderly father. Thanks to our hard work and resilience we have helped improve their quality of life!
Compulsive hoarding has a complex emotional connection and it’s important to realize that it’s nobody’s fault and no-one is to blame. Sometimes a hoard can build-up due to getting old and unable to clean the way you used to. Other times it is a way of expressing grief or emotional distress. You should never feel ashamed about a hoarding problem and if you require help, regaining control and improving your environment at home, we are here to help.
Bio-One specializes in hoarding residential cleaning jobs in Gwinnett County Area. With our unique experience and respectful approach to hoarding cleanups, we can work closely with clients and offer a bespoke service. While a hoarder may be stocking up on a mix of valuable and invaluable items, the process of stockpiling can cause considerable damage both psychologically and financially. From the additional weight, a hoard can have on the structural stability of a property, to the psychological impact hoarding can have on an individual and their loved ones, the cost of hoarding can become excessive. In this article, we’re going to discuss the cost of hoarding and how much a professional clean up will be.
Hoarding is the compulsive behavior of finding and keeping objects, animals or trash that the person believes has significant value. Common items that are hoarded are newspapers, photographs, clothes, food, plastic, furniture, appliances and electronics.
Hoarding can have a significant psychological impact and trigger anger, frustration, resentment and depression among family members. Hoarding behavior can be a result of emotional trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder and mental health conditions but its cost on an individual and their loves ones can cause additional distress. When the behavior spirals out of control and living conditions become unacceptable, a professional cleaning team is required.
Typically there are 5 levels to hoarding behavior, and the sooner you can intervene in this difficult situation, the better in terms of how expensive it will be to clean up.
Level 1: This is the first stage of hoarding behavior and may involve clutter, excess shopping and storing goods.
Level 2: This is when hoarding starts to impact your home and causes emotional distress. Family members may start to realize that there is an issue.
Level 3: After hoarding objects comes self-neglect. This could be connected to diet, personal hygiene and mental health.
Level 4: At this point intervention is key. A hoard can become excessive and start to cause psychological and physical damage. As the items start to mount up, the cost to clean up a hoard will become more expensive.
Level 5: Spiraling out of control, this is the final stage of hoarding and reflects a significant and on-going problem. In some cases, the mess can include pet feces, trash, hazardous materials and mold.
Hiring experts in hoarding cleanups can be expensive and you’ll need to understand how the cost will be calculated.
Professional cleaning depends on what needs to be cleaned, the extent of the hoard that needs to be cleared and how dirty the property is. The time that it will take to remove trash, sort and organize the hoard and deep clean each room will also be taken into consideration. Typically it takes a company to clean out a hoard is between 1-3 days. This is why it’s important to bring in the professionals before a hoard gets out of hand.
Step 1: Our professional hoarding clean up team will walk through the property with you first to assess the impact and level of the hoard.
Step 2: Next, we will discuss what needs to be done, and how we plan to remove, clean and organize the space. This is when we can discuss your expectations and any requirements you may have.
Step 3: Before we carry out any hoarding clean up duties, we will first detail the rooms that need to be cleaned, whether there are any white goods and appliances, soft furnishings and carpets that need to be cleaned.
Step 4: During the hoarding clean up we will organize all items into 4 piles. When we work through a house we use a 4 pile system to organize the items. It’s a common misconception that hoarding clean up professionals will just throw everything away. We respect the psychological impact hoarding and cleaning up a hoard can have, so we take time to help and assist rather than take over.
1: Things to keep
2: Items to donate
3: Trash
4: Any items that the client is unsure about will be kept in another pile
